The report that GPT-6 Astra helped decode a 1918 German ADFGVX message is another reason I expect interesting historical research from AI. The result still needs to be treated as a reported solution rather than a settled scholarly finding, but the method is easy to understand: a model searched across a cipher, a historical key, and the context around the message, then connected the decoded text to what was known about the war. AI can sift through far more material than a person and can move between subjects that normally sit in separate departments. A problem like this belongs partly to mathematics and partly to history, which is exactly where the tools may become useful. (the original account, the historical report)
